About Me

Writing was the only thing I ever wanted to do, and I feel fortunate to do it for both a career and a hobby.  A seasoned journalist and editor, I work with a variety of media outlets and nonprofit organizations. Though I have special expertise in a few areas, I don’t limit myself to just one or two topics. If there’s a good story to tell, I want to try to tell it.

My main objective as a writer is simple: make things clear. I know how to “translate” complex material into a narrative that’s compelling and readable. I know grammar and AP Style front to back, but I also know that effective writing depends just as much on tone and clarity.

I publish fiction as Michael Harris and am currently revising a science-fiction novel. I’ve always had a tendency to build worlds in my head; describing them on a page is how I bring them to life.

After growing up in the small-town South, I’ve spent my entire adult life in metropolitan Washington, DC. These days I’m proud to call Frederick, Maryland home. I think of it as the last outpost of the DMV, where I-270 ends and the city and suburbs give way to the country. When I’m not writing, I like spending time with my family, being outside, catching up on Netflix, eating vegan ice cream, and rooting for my beloved Maryland Terps (I’m an alum).

Would you like to work together? Want to see more? Don’t hesitate to get in touch through any of my social media accounts. I’d love to chat with you! I love chatting.
